Conflicts in A Lesson Before Dying October 31, 2012
In A Lesson Before Dying, the protagonist, Grant, has to deal with two different conflicts that takes over his life. Grant Wiggins a very educated, black man lives in a community he is not too content to be in. His original plan was to move away from Louisiana due to the problems he faces with racism in the South. Grant wants to escape from the environment he is currently in and move away but he faces two conflicts that stops him from making that choice a reality.
Grant goes through many conflicts in his life that stops him from doing what he really wants. Many people come into his life and put a huge burden over his shoulders to make something happen. Two people come into in life that stop him from what his true desires are. Vivian being his beloved lover comes into his life and prevents him from doing what he really wants to do. But the fact that he doesn't want to leave her side in Louisiana, he stays in the South instead to be with her until they both move out of the community together. Another conflict that stops Grant from moving out of Bayonne is that he was asked to do a huge favor for Miss Emma. Miss Emma being so saddened by the fact that they called her son a hog in court wants to prove the people wrong. So she asks Grant, being the educated man he is, to help her son become a man before he is executed. Grant has to put all his own personal choice at a pause to help Miss Emma and Jefferson because he feels as if he is obligated to help them. Grant most definitely feels as if it is wrong to let everyone's problems behind him and go on with his life but instead he puts everyone elses issues before he could handle is own.
The conflicts that Grant faces in the novel drives the story because the book in basically about the obstacles and sacrifices he has to go through in his life. The fact that Grant stays in the South instead of moving helps the story move because the readers follow the life Grant is living. If it wasn't for the conflicts that are present in the story it wouldn't be as interesting as it is now. If Vivian wasn't the reason for his stay in Louisiana, he probably would've left the state and he would've never helped Jefferson in the first place.
